Our History

Founded by Shepparton Optometrist, Brendan Norden in the early 1980’s and known at that time as Young and Norden Optometrists, the practice grew steadily.  Brendan was joined by fellow Shepparton Optometrist, Alan Schmedje in 1992 and later sold the business to him in 1993.  Upon becoming the new owner, Alan renamed the practice Shepparton Optical Services.

In 2000, Shepparton Optical Dispenser Theresia Cirillo became Alan’s business partner.  That same year, another local, Kara Mitchell, joined the practice as a Consulting Optometrist.

Together, this trio have worked incredibly hard and today, Shepparton Optical is one of the most respected Optometries and Optical dispensing outlets in the area.

Our Team

Alan Schmedje – Owner and Optometrist

Educated in Shepparton, Alan Schmedje completed his tertiary studies at the University of Melbourne and returned to Shepparton to start his career.  Alan’s optometry career journey began in 1992 at Young and Norden Optometrists – a practice he bought in 1993, and renamed Shepparton Optical Services.

Since becoming the owner, Alan has completed two courses in ocular therapeutics, enabling him to prescribe ocular medications.  Dedicated to his profession and to the optical needs of the people of Shepparton, Alan maintains clinical knowledge by completing up to 20 hours of further education each year.

Professionally, Alan’s interests lie in both contact lenses and managing ocular diseases such as glaucoma.
